This sculptural piece was the outcome to a brief we had a few weeks ago about text and illustration. The tower is a response to a poem called “out of the blue” by Simon Armitage - a British poet who, in this piece, documents the world trade centre disaster. Its a really thought provoking poem and if you get a chance I would definitely go and have a look. Theres a great reading that Rufus Sewell does, you can get to it through this link - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yacjArDnRbY .
A particularly fitting quote from the poem I feel..
“”what false alarm can be trusted again?
What case or bag can be left unclaimed?
What flight can be sure to steer its course?
What building can claim to own its form?
What column can vow to stand up straight?
What floor can agree to bear its weight?
What tower can vouch to retain its height?
What peace can be said to be water-tight?
What truth can be said to be bullet-proof?
Can anything swear to be built to last?
Can anything pledge to be hard and fast?
What system can promise to stay in place?
What structure can promise to hold its shape?
What future can promise to keep the faith?
Everything changed. Nothing is safe.”“
This piece was a response to a brief we had based on the “Library of Babel” short story (which you can find here - http://jubal.westnet.com/hyperdiscordia/library_of_babel.html - should you have the patience and time to read it!). The reason its in such a strange format is because the design was prospectively mean to be placed in full scale on the illustration departments wall in the art school.
Finally got the finished summer project piece up on the blog.. Sorry the picture quality isn’t too good, there’s something about having a piece to touch and see for yourself that gives it an extra something..
This image was used in the final outcome of a recent brief. The final outcome being a cover sleeve for the EP ”strange form of life” by the artist “Bonnie prince billy”.
These are both kind of tweaking pages for the final design.. I know there not pretty or particularly pleasing to look at but thats not really what I want to do with this blog.. Its more about a thought process that I wanted to document and if anyone ever reads this, maybe being able to share an idea or two!
Well the very first post of a new blog!! The first brief for the new course was a summer project, aimed to kinda show everyone what your all about and your style of artwork - so important to get it right because no one wants to look rubbish the first day back! .. This was one of the first experiments in my sketchbook with the string texture and It actually ended up being the turning point in configuring the final piece final piece.
